Class Policies/Processes
Class SAFETY
Safety is my #1 priority in class. It is unacceptable for any student to put themselves or others in danger. Careless behavior is a common reason for avoidable injuries in physical education class. Careless behavior will be reprimanded and dealt with on a case by case basis.
Weekly Responsibilities for the Year
To take responsibility for your own success in my class, it is important to get yourself in a weekly routine. Your weekly routine is critical to be successful in my class. The following is a list of all your Weekly Responsibilities. Your goal is to have these become second nature in my class:
✓Check the weather so that you know what type of clothing will be appropriate for your comfort during exercise.
✓Check the weekly Blog before Monday so that you know exactly what is happening in class for the week.
✓Check your homework page to see if a new assignment has been posted and when it is due.
✓Update your WOW template.
✓Fill out the e-Run Log (if needed) for the previous week’s run.
✓Put any loose papers in your Sportfolio behind the correct tab.
✓Prepare to lead stretches for your designated day of the week.
✓Take your PE uniform home and WASH IT at the end of every week.
Participation:
Students are awarded 20 points every 3 weeks for participation. Certain negative acts of behavior during class, result in certain number of points lost. Most of my participation policy is outlined on the Participation page. There are also Buy Back assignments that can be done to earn back points lost for participation.
Weekly Blogs
Every week, typically Sunday morning, I send out a weekly Blog, detailing what will be happening in class for the week. The Blog is pretty detailed and designed to make you completely successful in my class. If you read and understand the Blog, you will have no problem passing my class. Weekly Blogs (6th Grade/8th Grade) can be accessed from your Class Home Pages.
PE Uniform:
Every student is required to wear a CMS issued PE uniform everyday to class (unless specifically told not to). The required uniform consists of CMS shorts and a CMS shirt which can be bought and issued in the first couple of days of school. Students are also required to wear APPROPRIATE ATHLETIC SHOES. Appropriate shoes are lace-up, running or cross-training shoes. Click HERE to get the details about purchasing a PE uniform.
Sportfolios:
Students are required to have a Sportfolio in my class and bring it whenever it is needed for the day. A failure to do will result in a loss of participation points. Please check out the Sporfolio page for more details.
Grading Process
I grade by setting up different categories in class and giving each of those categories a weight. Every quarter, the categories and the weights change depending on what we are trying to accomplish that particular quarter. DO NOT try to calculate the grade based on total points, it will not calculate appropriately. To check the various grading categories, click these links: 6th Grade Quarterly Categories and 8th Grade Quarterly Categories.
Typical Week In My Class
Most weeks are broken down by 3 days (Mon, Tues, Thur) being dedicated to whatever unit is being taught. A list of all your units for the year can be found here (6th Grade/8th Grade). One day a week is dedicated as a “Run Day” and another day is dedicated as a “Fitness Day”. I say most weeks, because there will be weeks throughout the year that do not follow this format at all. Missed Runs or Fitness Activities MUST be made up (see Make-Up Assignments).
Weekly Runs
Most weeks of the year, you will have a run day. I rotate different types of runs every week so that you do not repeat the same run over and over again. Every week, after completing a run, you are responsible for 2 things:
1. Filling out the appropriate Run Graph in Tab #2 of your Sportfolio. Most of
the time, we will have enough time to fill out in class, if not, you need to
complete it at home.
2. You need to go to the e-Run Page and complete the appropriate e-Run Log.
For example, after running the mile, you will complete the Mile Run Log.
To see a description of the types of runs you will do in my class, click here.
Word of the Week (W.O.W)
Every week, you will be responsible for completing the W.O.W. template. You will be given 5-7 words/quarter and then a short quiz to see if you understand the words. The words can either be found in your Weekly Blog or on the WOW page on my website.
Homework/Projects
You are going to have several homework assignments and a few projectys throughout the year. It usually works out that you have more homework assignments in the 1st semester and more projects in the 2nd semester. You have your homework rubric in Tab #1 of your Sportfolio. To read all about your Homework Policies, click here.
Units of Instruction
You will have several different “Units” throughout the year. The Units for 6th and 8th grade are very different. Most units require that you download handouts by a a particular date and put them in your Sportfolio. Failing to print them out and bring to class will result in a loss of 5 participation points every day they are missing past the due date. Your Class Home Pages will have information on the units as well as links to all downloads.
Long Term Injuries:
If a student misses 3 weeks or more of Physical Education due to an injury, the student is required to complete the Long-Term Injury Project. This project will award the student with all of their participation points lost for the quarter.
Muscle Quizzes
Several times throughout the year students will have a muscle quiz. There are approximately 10 muscles that all students need to know, as I reference them all the time during different activities in class. Quizzes are usually no more than 5-8 minutes long and account for 5% of a students’ overall grade. Check out the muscle quiz requirements and information. Check out this diagram showing all of the muscles you need to know.
Leading Stretches
One day a week students will be responsible for leading stretching. Stretch leadership is taken seriously and applies to a students’ participation grade. There are specific requirements and a rubric that I use to grade a student when they lead stretches. Click HERE to read about leading stretches.
Making Up Work:
For any missed Run or Fitness day, there are specific make-up templates that need to be completed and turned in. Click here for all make-up assignment information.
